Sculpture symposium is a popular format of collaboration between artists worldwide. It is an art residency where artworks are being created and as a result - presented to the public. Normally, the purpose of a sculpture symposium is creation of city sculpture park or temporary exhibition of art objects, which will subsequently be owned by private collection of the sponsor.в проекта.
During sculpture symposium in Bila Tserkva, we used general format of the event, but significantly shifted the emphasis.
Our goal was to make the whole process open and accessible to the public.
Тhe chosen theme “Interaction” refers to both - artists interaction with a new urban environment and active interaction of the city residents with new format of the event which resulted in creation of contemporary public space. While developing our idea we had to face the fact that average Ukrainian often perceives contemporary art as something incomprehensible and repulsive. Therefore, we decided to include educational component to the symposium.
First of all, we have chosen an outdoor working space for the artists where everyone interested could see the process of metal sculptures creation, communicate with artists, and thus feel their involvement in the process for two weeks of the symposium.
Secondly, we have developed an educational program which included lectures, discussions, documentary, artist-talk in the form of a free dialogue with the audience and curatorial tour over the newly opened contemporary sculpture boulevard. The program allowed for relevant perception of contemporary sculpture, which was created during the symposium and installed in the public space of the city.
The presentation of artworks and the grand opening of the Contemporary Sculpture Boulevard in Bila Tserkva city has become a real celebration for its residents.
Choosing the theme “Interaction”, we could not even imagine the scale it will incur. Every day residents, public organizations and local businesses were joining us. Inspired by the idea and overall result, they wanted to participate and help the process.
During this project, we successfully challenged the stereotypes and involved community, artists, local authority and businesses in the joint creative process.
Global changes start with simple steps. Our project shows how the constructive interaction between the municipality, society and business within one cultural project can give excellent result.
